DBS Checks for Individuals

If you are self-employed or a contractor operating via a Limited company, then you need to consider which DBS Check is relevant to you and your industry; Basic DBS Check or Enhanced DBS Check.

The DBS Check superseded the old CRB Checks back in 2012. The Disclosure and Barring Service provides individuals and employers with details of convictions and cautions that are considered unspent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974.

The resulting certificate contains impartial and confidential criminal history information held by the Police National Computer and government departments. The Basic Check can be applied for as an individual and the Basic and Enhanced Checks can be used by employers to make safer recruitment decisions.

Basic DBS Check

The DBS began processing the Basic DBS Check (for recruitment decisions made in England or Wales) on the 1st January 2018 to provide individuals with the opportunity to apply directly for a basic check. If you are self-employed, a volunteer or a contractor working for others, then the Basic DBS Check can provide your current and future clients with the confidence that they aren’t putting their business, stakeholders, or possessions at any unnecessary risk by bringing you into their organisation or home.

A Basic DBS Check also provides you with an advantage against your competition who haven’t taken the due diligence and steps to get a Basic DBS Check in place.

The Basic DBS Check should also be a factor when you are choosing who to bring into your company. For example, if you work in construction and using contractors, then do they have a Basic DBS Check in place? Are these people you can trust beyond the fact they can do the job you’re hiring them to do?

Enhanced DBS Check

The Enhanced DBS Check has been around for years and is aimed at individuals who are working with vulnerable people i.e. care homes, schools. If you are self-employed, a volunteer or a contractor who would potentially be working around vulnerable people, then you need to have an Enhanced DBS Check by law.

Anyone hiring you to work within their organisation will request one and if you don’t have one they will typically organise that for you as the Enhanced DBS Check is only available to purchase via an organisation or business entity i.e. limited company, CiC. If you are an individual operating under a Limited company, then you’ll be able to organise an Enhanced DBS Check through your company as long as there is someone else within your company who can verify your ID in support of your application.

An Enhanced DBS Check costs £59 and will provide additional information to the Basic DBS Check; in addition to the National checks, searches are made against local police force records, the Department for Education and Skills and the Department of Health.
